It has come to the attention of the GSLRA Board that there may be problems with the Voters’ List for this fall’s municipal election. Specifically, that some qualified voters who have been on the list for previous elections, may no longer be on the list. If your name is not on the Voters’ List, you will not be able to vote.
The voters that seem to be affected most by this problem are voters who own property in Ontario municipalities other than their “home” address. This could include many of our members who have a home in a municipality other than Gravenhurst and a cottage in Gravenhurst. And as we explained in our recent newsletter, by Ontario law, property owners (and their spouse) are entitled to vote in any and all municipalities where they own property.
As background, in previous elections, the voters’ lists were compiled / maintained by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). But for the 2026 municipal elections, that job has been handed over to Elections Ontario.
At the current time, we do not know the exact cause of the problem nor how widespread this problem is, but we have heard that it is happening in many municipalities across Ontario that have a substantial number of seasonal residents (cottagers).
In order to ensure that property owners and their spouses are on the voters’ list, we are asking members to check the Gravenhurst Voters’ List. If you were on the Gravenhurst Voters’ List for the last municipal election (2022) and you are no longer on the list, please let us know as soon as possible.
Go to the Elections Ontario website – https://vreg.registertovoteon.ca/en/home (Register to Vote) to check your status on the Gravenhurst Voters’ List. If you own property in other municipalities, we also recommend you check to see if you are on the Voters’ List in those municipalities as well. The Register to Vote website provides a path to add the property owner’s name and spouse to voters’ lists, although the process can be cumbersome.

This is important – if you don’t act now, you risk losing your ability to vote in Gravenhurst, where seasonal residents make up a large majority of the property tax base.
